Day of Sustainability
VELSEN – On the 10th of October 2019, Velsen organized The Day of Sustainability. spread across the entire municipality, there were all kinds of events for kids, residents, alderman and entrepreneurs. Velsen has a lot to offer when it comes to sustainability and wants to be a role model for the rest of the Netherlands. (Video Language: NL)
This is only the beginning
From kids to grandparents, we all live on the same planet, breathe the same oxygen and want the same thing: for Mother Earth to last a lot longer than our own individual time on it. That’s why Velsen organized a day with events for every resident of the municipality. Kids were taught how to vlog about sustainability and were told stories by alderman, entrepreneurs came together to talk about green businesses and their responsibilities to the next generations, the mayor visited one of the most green and self-sufficient houses in The Netherlands that is located in Velsen and much more! Our goal with this project is to unite the municipality of Velsen, give the young a voice in the climate debate and to get rid of prejudices about individual sustainability.
The youth needs a voice
The young have the future. So we need to make them aware of the current situation and the possible solutions. That’s why we visited primary school ‘De Bosbeek’. We gave kids the possibility to take something that they like, vlogging, and use it for something that’s important, sustainability. Kids need a voice in ‘the climate talk’, because they’ll have to live and deal with the consequences of the actions we take.
This is a first step, a wake-up call to all!
It's fun to be green
After our visit to primary school ‘The Bosbeek’, we joined the mayor of Velsen on his visit to mr. Schorrel’s house. He turned his decennia’s old house into one the most green and self-sufficient houses in The Netherlands. What started as a small project, became mr. Schorrel’s primary goal. He welcomed the mayor and us for a tour through the house and showed us all kinds of small innovations that lowered his utility bill.
My utility bill used to be €650 a month... now it's €50!
The climate is changing
Dedicated to The Day Of Sustainability, the Pieter Vermeulen Museum created a children’s book about climate change. This book, joined by illustrations and photos, tells the story of the little gnome ‘Pietertje’, who has to constantly adapt to his vastly changing environment and the effects of climate change.
Alderman from the municipality of Velsen visited different primary schools to read aloud the story and give them their own little gnome to take care of. They talked with the kids about possible solutions for the changing environment and made them realize that they can make a change.
But kids can’t do it by themselves. Also the entrepreneurs, big companies and the municipality itself will have to focus on sustainability. That’s why they all came together on The Day Of Sustainability. They talked about their experiences, mistakes made, lessons learned, advices and collaborations.
We need plastic-free festivals and an energy neutral beach.
High School Kids & Sustainability
VELSEN – As time goes by, a new generation rises. How can we make sure that the students of today, are included in the climate discussion? We joined 250 students on their trip through Velsen to see what initiatives there are and watched them create their own durable and sustainable projects. (Video Language: NL)
A sustainable Velsen
As 250 students from High School ‘Ichthus Lyceum’ did their research, we had two junior-vloggers help us interview them. The students visited a seafood farm, joined a litter project and inspected their own neighborhood to learn more about what the municipality of Velsen is doing. Our junior-vloggers also interviewed multiple alderman and teachers to discover what they are hoping to achieve with this project. Our goal with this project is to unite the municipality of Velsen, give the young a voice in the climate debate and to get rid of prejudices about individual sustainability.
Sustainability needs to become a part of the social environment of the youth.
Do you have a cool project to which we can contribute?
