THE HAGUE – There are approximately 30.000 households in The Hague that are unable to pay their debt. What are common prejudices? What choices have to be made? Schuldenlab070 hosted a week filled with activities that display the causes and effects of debt. (Video Language: NL)
It takes a city to solve debt
A lot of people are ashamed to say it out loud, but more and more people are dealing with debt in The Hague. People who are in debt, often end up in a downward spiral of social isolation. Schuldenlab070 wants people to stop being ashamed and to call out for help. They try to make people more aware of this growing problem and what it’s actually like to live with only 40 euros a week. An example of this, is the Krap-Bij-Kas-huis.
Is it possible to live with a budget of 40 euros a week?
Part of the Schuldenlab070 presents… week, was the intense experience at the Krap-bij-kas-huis. A collaboration of Schuldenlab070 with Onzichtbaar Den Haag, Haag Wonen and Kringloop Den Haag.
In this experience, you’re a guest in the house of a single mother who lives on a tight budget. You are confronted with some of the choices she has to make. Experience-experts tell their stories and some of the biased opinions they had to face.
After our visit at the Krap-bij-kas-huis, we talked with Selma, a 19 year old girl and single mother with over 20.000 euros of debt. On a journey through her neighbourhood, she talked with 2 guests from the business-world to let them experience her daily life. A big part of her debt existed of AfterPay purchases that she never payed. She was able to buy a bed, a washing machine and lots more, worth more than 2000 euros, while already in debt.
This neighbourhood isn't safe for a 2-year old girl.
On our last experience, we met Chris. She works as a bailiff and invited us to join her on some of the homevisits that happen on a daily basis. She tells us how Flanderijn, the organization she works for, tries to get rid of the biased opinions about bailiffs. She showed us all of the possibilities there are to help people that are dealing with a lot of debt. But as she pointed out repeatedly, the most important part is for people to acknowledge their situation and reach out for help.
Magazine On The Spot
Together with Magazine on the Spot, we created a swipe-zine with all of the projects, videos, interviews and photos of the Schuldenlab070 presents… week. Our goal with this project, is to get rid of the shame when it comes to living in debt, create an open conversation on these subjects and unite The Hague.
Do you have a cool project to which we can contribute?
